how to find out what filesystem is right for you?

hello, so in another thread i was asking about zfs vs ext4 and it made me realize, i don't know how to judge a file system and figure out what file system is best for my use case

i have one laptop, several external hard drives, and i serve only myself

given that use case scenario what would be my best file system and why? and in the future how could i figure out how to decide what file system would be best for my particular use case scenario?

TheFu ad I gave you many options to think about in your last thread.

Lots of filesystems work with Linux. As we suggested, Google and read up what the strengths and weaknesses are for those and decide for yourself, based on what you do, and plan to do in the future.

I made a suggestion that you included reading up on Volume Managers.

What are your plans for what you do, and will expect to do in the next year or so?

I'm not enough of an expert to add to what MAFoElffen and TheFu have already said in another thread.

However, I will say that you seem to be overcomplicating things a wee bit.

My advice is that if you are a regular desktop user, then stick to the default filesystem which is usually ext4.

I have played around with other filesystems in a test environment but for my daily usage I stick with what I know, what is stable and reliable, and what most users would be able to help with if you ran into issues.

The more "exotic" the filesystem, the less users who will be able to help you.
